He was doing an experiment to see how people would treat him if he didn't look like himself.
Back at the house, Mr. McFeely stops by to pick up Zak: The One-of-a-Kind Dog for the library and reads it with Mister Rogers. Outside, Mr. McFeely demonstrates a unique wind-up toy he calls a 'speedy critter.'
