Meanwhile Candy discovers she lost her hard-earned money during her escape and that she traveled in the wrong direction once again. She is even farther from Southampton than she was before. Mr. Carson's children - Sam, Jeff, and Susy - sneak Candy into the barn and bring her a midnight snack, while talking about their mother and Mount Rodney. Susy falls ill with a high fever and Mr. Carson would rather murder the doctor than ask him for help: he blames him for the demise of his late spouse.
