白嘉轩和鹿三在地里浇水，白嘉轩盼望着能有块活水地，鹿三笑他想的太美。白嘉轩却闷着头不知道想些什么，他躺到当初仙草躺过的那块地上，不知道在想些什么。
路过的鹿子霖看见，十分不解。
白嘉轩请冷先生做中人，提出拿自家的水田，换鹿家那块仙草躺过的路边坡地。鹿家父子合计了半天，觉得白嘉轩肯定是听信了朱先生说的白鹿的传说，白白让自家捡了便宜。
白嘉轩偷偷拿出了地契，他和鹿子霖二人当着冷先生的面，按下了手印。
村里人都传说白嘉轩之所以要换那块地，就是因为仙草躺过，白嘉轩也不解释，只说传的好，只有白秉德知道嘉轩坚持换地，必有原因。
白嘉轩果然在那块坡地下，挖出了水源，一众乡民大惊。鹿家父子这才了解白嘉轩的用意，后悔莫及，可惜也来不及了。
白嘉轩去看望姐夫朱先生，坦诚他之所以坚持换地，就是因为早知道那块地有水。地就是白嘉轩的命，朱先生教育白嘉轩这世上还有比命更重要的，他拿出剪刀，要剪嘉轩的辫子，白嘉轩吓得满屋乱窜，却还是被朱先生一剪刀剪去了辫子。
白嘉轩捂着头发低着头回了白鹿原，却发现从城里回来的人都被剪了辫子。鹿子霖见大家都被剪了辫子，转身就扔了自己的假辫子。
朱先生得到消息，方升死了，朱先生十分感慨，唱起了阳关三叠，并决定履行他对方升的承诺。临走前，白嘉轩告诉朱先生，他决定让村里几户没有壮劳力的人家来种那块活水地。朱先生十分欣慰。
