白嘉轩待在死牢，没想到狱警却突然改变了态度，毕恭毕敬的端来热水，请白嘉轩洗脸换衣服，白嘉轩不明所以，还以为这是要送他上断头台了。何县长亲自赶来，将白嘉轩接出了死牢，还好言安慰嘉轩，言语中提到了张总督，白嘉轩这才明白是有人搬出了张总督，救了他一命。白嘉轩正好利用这一点，顺手救出了胡掌柜。
鹿子霖拉着粮食往白家去，一路上人们看到他就躲到一边，鹿子霖百思不得其解，到了白家见到鹿三才知道，他上县城告发鹿三的事情被人知道了。
鹿家父子召集众乡亲，商量营救白嘉轩，大家伙推举鹿子霖做主事之人，鹿子霖正洋洋得意，忽听的有人喊：白嘉轩回来了。众人全部赶上前去迎接，只留下鹿家父子大眼瞪小眼。
嘉轩回来了，众人都聚集在白家听白嘉轩讲他在牢里的经历。走后，鹿三告诉白嘉轩大家都准备推举他做族长，但嘉轩告诉鹿三，他在牢中许诺让鹿子霖当族长。这些话，都被躲在一旁的鹿子霖听到了。
第二天，鹿子霖兴冲冲的换上了新衣来到祠堂。虽然大多数人都支持白嘉轩，但白嘉轩果然履行了承诺，当众推举鹿子霖为族长。鹿子霖正暗自得意，没想到鹿父却突然来到并当众表示支持白嘉轩。
白嘉轩当上了族长，鹿子霖十分想不通自己的父亲为什么不支持自己，在家发脾气，精明的鹿父却知道，族长并不是那么好当的。
