仙草询问鸡毛信的去向，白嘉轩怕她担心不愿意告诉她，仙草心中明白，信肯定被他送出去了。十分担心，劝说白嘉轩收手，但白嘉轩一心想为乡亲们讨公道，并不听她的劝阻。
鹿子霖父子听了田福闲的话，暗中合计，认为田福闲是有意让白嘉轩闹事，而他正好可以趁机当上族长。两人暗自得意。
鹿三伪造了鸡毛和信封，却没找到火漆，二人正着急，仙草出来告诉他们白父已经睡下了，然后转身离开。白嘉轩追了上去。仙草担心白嘉轩，也不理解他为什么要这么做，白嘉轩告诉她当初他是受姐夫朱先生的教导，明白人活着总有比命更重要的东西。白嘉轩安慰仙草，朱先生说他命大，他还要当爸呢。
第二天一大早，田福闲和鹿子霖带着人往白家走，路上，田福闲许诺鹿子霖如果解决了这次的事情，就向县长保举他当族长，鹿子霖听后，十分兴奋。
白家，白父已经进入了弥留之际，白父担心白嘉轩，劝说他不要做出头鸟跟官府对抗，白嘉轩直言，如果他这次的事情做成了，以后不管做什么，乡亲们都能跟着他，相信他。
田福闲和鹿子霖到了白家，借口看望白父，赖在白家不走，让白嘉轩没法出门。鹿三也带回来不好的消息，先前联系好的各家都被田福闲带来的人堵在了家里，不能出门，贺老大的火铳子也没法响了。白嘉轩急得团团转，只有让鹿三先翻院墙出去。
