白父去世，大家聚集在祠堂，推举新任族长，年轻人们都推举白嘉轩，而老人们则认为白嘉轩太不安分，想推举鹿子霖。白嘉轩提出让鹿父担任族长，鹿父却说他年纪大了，要给年轻人机会。
正在这时，鹿子霖举着新贴的告示慌慌张张的冲了进来，白嘉轩看完，转身冲了出去，原来是官府来抓人了。
他们抓走了鹿三。晚上，白嘉轩看着襁褓里的儿子，一言不发。他告诉仙草，他准备进城托人营救鹿三，哪怕是卖房子拆地，也要救回三哥。仙草担心白嘉轩出事，提出要一起进城去，白嘉轩没有同意。嘉轩准备偷偷溜出去，没想到被仙草拦个正着，原来仙草早猜到白嘉轩无人可托，不过是想拿自己去换鹿三的命。仙草想尽办法阻拦，白嘉轩却告诉她，他必须去。这件事是他领的头，只有他出面承认，原上的人心才不会散，他才能活的像个真正的人。
白嘉轩闯进了县政府，被警察阻拦，他在门口大喊，他才是主事之人，被出门的县长听见，将他抓了进去。原以为，鹿三会被放出去，谁知他们却没有放回鹿三。
有人给鹿家送礼，鹿子霖正暗自得意，鹿父却告诉他，这说明白嘉轩回不来了，吓得鹿子霖忙把门口的礼物都放了回去。
冷先生亲自上门，请求鹿子霖出面救白嘉轩，鹿子霖不情愿，冷先生已保举他做族长为诱饵。鹿子霖仍有些犹豫。
白嘉轩听同屋的药铺老板讲述他的冤屈，十分不解，为什么革命了反而没有了王法。
官家希望白嘉轩招出他的同伙，白嘉轩咬紧牙关，只说自己是主事人，没有同伙，生生挨了一顿大刑
